Jolene tells us about her time at BCT

Hi everyone! My name is Joleen McQuillan and I started Belfast Central Training in September 2014 as a Level 2 Hairdressing student. I went to Girl’s Model previously and when I was finishing there, I knew I wanted to go somewhere where I could train up in something creative that would also make me employable. I was advised to look into BCT as they do a great hairdressing course so I signed up and I definitely made the right choice!

We have a salon in BCT where we do all our practical training. Clients come in for treatments and we also run styling competitions with different themes. We even raise some money for charity with the competitions. There are hairdressing classrooms as well where we learn theory about hair. Your hairdressing tutor will help you find a placement that is right for you and this is where you get experience in a real life salon and apply all the learning you’ve done in BCT.

I also get to study for my English, Maths and ICT Essential Skills which I really enjoy doing. These build up the necessary skills I need in the workplace and now I am way more confident booking appointments, speaking with clients, handling money and recording measurements (to name a few!). I also got to complete my certificates in Employability and Personal Development which are great to add to my CV.

All the tutors are friendly and easy to get along with which makes everything so much easier. Since I have been here, I have referred a few of my friends and they have stayed too. Everyone is put into classes with people similar to your age and you get to mix with different people and make new friends.

The staff and students at BCT organise trips too as it is exciting to get a day out every now and then. The trips I have been on so far are to the Ulster Museum, Belfast Media Group, the BBC and I’ve heard the tutors are organising more. The pictures of these events go on the BCT Facebook page.

I have nearly been at BCT for two years now and my Level 2 NVQ in Hairdressing is almost complete, along with my Essential Skills. I am delighted that I have signed up to study my Level 3 Apprenticeship in Hairdressing with BCT so I can progress even further within my chosen career. I’m so happy I made the choice to come here and I’m grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had so far!
