Hair Dressing

People can really go somewhere with 'City & Guilds' and 'Apprenticeship' qualifications. We award them to the highest standards of professional ability in hairdressing that gives you the skill you need for the job you want, and employers the world over recognise that too.

A City & Guilds qualification can be undertaken at any age, although the normal point of entry is as a direct entrant from school.

The following information is designed to give you an overview into what is available to you by training at BCT.

The award at level 1 is designed to accredit the skills of trainees and other salon staff working as hairdressing assistants. Level 2 covers the essential skills required by a hairdresser. A broader range of units at level 3 reflects the roles of senior salon staff. Units range from shampooing, conditioning and drying hair, to facilitating learning through demonstration and instruction.

City and Guilds NVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing

Target Audience
This qualification is suitable for those wishing to pursue a career in hairdressing and gain the necessary basic skills and knowledge.

Course Objective
Successful completion of this qualification proves that you have demonstrated the skills and knowledge to assist with basic salon services.

Course Content
Units include contributing to salon reception duties, to shampoo, condition and dry hair. A total of 5 mandatory units and 1 optional unit to be completed.

Assessment
To achieve this qualification a total of 6 units must be completed. This is achieved by building a portfolio of evidence containing workplace observations, testimonies from other people, work records and questions.

City and Guilds NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing

Target Audience
This qualification is suitable for those wishing to pursue a career in the hairdressing profession and gain the necessary knowledge and skills as required by a junior member of a salon team.

Course Objective
To provide the basic qualifications required to work as a junior stylist.

Course Content
Units include cutting, styling and drying hair using basic techniques to changing hair colour using basic techniques. A total of 8 mandatory units and 1 optional unit to be completed.

Assessment
To achieve this qualification a total of 9 units must be completed plus relevant key skills. This is achieved by building a portfolio of evidence containing workplace observations, testimonies from other people, work records and questions.

Level 1   Level 2   Level 3

City and Guilds NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing

Target Audience
Suitable for candidates who have successfully completed NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing and who wish to develop their competence at a supervisory level whilst in full time employment.

Course Objective
To provide the necessary knowledge and skills for those aspiring to management positions in the hairdressing industry.

Course Content
Units include setting and dressing hair to achieve a variety of looks to, perming and colouring hair using a variety of techniques. A total of 4 mandatory units and 5 optional units to be completed.

Assessment
To achieve this qualification a total of 9 units must be completed. This is achieved by building a portfolio of evidence containing workplace observations, testimonies from other people, work records and questions.
